Breaking News :Eze Madumere, Deputy Governor of imo State, has been impeached

Madumere, who is seeking to replace Governor Rochas Okorocha in 2019, was impeached on monday by 19 of the 27 members of the Imo State House of Assembly.

Impeachment proceedings against him kicked off on July 10, when Ugonna Ozuruigbo, the Deputy Speaker, moved a motion accusing him of abandoning his duties and failing to carry out official duties assigned to him by the Governor, among others.

The house then set up a six-man committee headed by Kennedy Ibe, the member representing Obowo Local Government Area, to probe the allegations and report back within seven days.

Madumere’s governorship ambition has pitched him against Okorocha, who is rooting for Uche Nwosu, his son-inlaw and current Chief of Staff.

Okorocha and Madumere belong to two different factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Breaking News “The Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation of Philip Edward Wilson, presented by S.E. Mons.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Philip Wilson, an Australian archbishop convicted in May of concealing abuse by a notorious paedophile priest in the 1970s, the Vatican said Monday. Earlier this month Wilson, 67, was sentenced to a year in detention after becoming one of the highest-ranking church officials to be convicted on the charge.

“The Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation of the pastoral government of the Archdiocese of Adelaide (Australia), presented by S.E. Mons. Philip Edward Wilson,” the Vatican said in a statement.

His resignation comes less than a fortnight after Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull asked the pope to sack Wilson, who was found guilty in an Australian court of failing to report allegations against paedophile priest Jim Fletcher.

He had long denied the charges and initially resisted calls to resign pending an appeal against his conviction. Wilson’s legal team made four attempts to have the case thrown out, arguing that he suffered from Alzheimer’s and so should avoid trial. But a magistrate in Australia found Wilson guilty of concealing a serious indictable offence of another person, concluding that his primary motive was to protect the church.

He said when sentencing him that Wilson showed “no remorse or contrition”. The court has adjourned the matter until August 14 to assess whether Wilson can serve his sentence under home detention.

Association devises easy way to collect, dispose of maize husks, other vegetables waste

Jakande Fruit Market Maize Sellers Association, Ketu, Lagos, says it has made the disposal of maize husks and other vegetable wastes from the market easy with immediate evacuation. The association’s Vice Chairman, Mr Lawal Nurudeen, who made the assertion in an interview on Monday, said the collection and disposal of the maize husk from the market was organised in a way that it was evacuated immediately the corn is sifted.

“The waste truck that takes the maize husks and other perishable vegetable waste are stationed daily at the road corner near the market.

“The truck is different from the ones arranged by the market association that collect mixed waste from the market. “Wheelbarrow pushers, over 20 of them, who carry the vegetable waste mainly maize husks from the market to offload them into the truck are at hand, he disclosed.

“The boys are paid by the maize sellers and they in turn have their own payment agreements with the truck driver. “The husks are taken to the factory that turns them into fertiliser that are sold back to farmers to use on their farms.’’

Nurudeen said that the truck collecting the maize husks and other valuable vegetable wastes did not accept any other type of wastes. He said that with this way, the sellers on their own started sorting out the waste to make it easy for the companies that needed them.

The vice-chairman said that some other groups in the market could also sort their waste for easy collection and disposal if companies indicated interest in using them as raw materials.

He said that farmers sent the maize sold in the market straight from their farms with each bag of maize properly identified as belonging to a particular farmer.

Nurudeen said the maize were sold to customers by the sellers on behalf of the farmers. He said that the association only collected ground rent from the sellers and the buyers, while the money from the sales were taken to the farmers.

Nurudeen added that the association also supervised the sale of the maize brought by farmers to ensure that their money was taken to them. He said the market had been functioning like that and that there had never been problems or complaints by farmers. (NAN)

News Update :bloody weekend in Akwa Ibom as armed militants ambushed soldiers at a checkpoint at Iwukem And 7 Souls Feared Death

It was a bloody weekend in Akwa Ibom as armed militants ambushed soldiers at a checkpoint at Iwukem in the volatile Etim Ekpo council, killing one soldier and five civilians, while two persons sustained injuries.

Apparently piqued by the development, a detachment of soldiers from the military base in the state, yesterday, went on rampage, setting shops and houses ablaze in Iwukem. confirmed  that the militants, numbering about 70, stormed the sleepy community at about 10p.m. on Saturday night, and attacked the soldiers stationed in the community to maintain the peace.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Yes, they (the militants) captured two boys and ordered them to take them through the bush path that linked Ikot Esop and Iwuekm. “The boys took them along the track that led to the junction through Hospital Road. When they came out from the road, they came face to face with the soldiers at the roundabout.

“Because the soldiers were not expecting any eventuality, they were caught off guard; the bullets killed one of them. The Hilux van was set ablaze, while others fled in a hail of bullets. Five other civilians were killed in the crossfire.”

The source said two of the dead civilians came from the neighbouring villages of Ika and Ukanafun, while the other three hailed from Iwukem, where the incident occurred. The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Madcon Ogbechie, who confirmed the incident said: “Investigation is already ongoing and we will get to the bottom of it.” At press time, the military hierarchy at 2 Battalion, Nigeria Army, Uyo, did not respond to inquiries on the issue. On his part, Divisional Police Officer, Etim Ekpo, Chairman Dore, said efforts were on “to ascertain whether the dead civilians were innocent local residents or some of the hoodlums caught in the crossfire.”

He blamed consistent militants’ activities in the area on cultism, lamenting the inability of the local residents to volunteer information on criminal elements in their neighbourhoods for easy detection and confrontation by security forces.

News Update :Barely 200 DAYS To Elections: Number Of Presidential Aspirants Hits 46

With barely 200 days to next year’s general elections, the political chessboard is replete with twists and turns, even as the number of aspirants jostling for various elective positions is increasing by the day. Checks by Daily Trust on Sunday reveal that no fewer than 46 politicians have indicated their intentions to throw their hats in the presidential ring on different political platforms to slug it out with incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the timetable and schedule of activities released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) earlier this year, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to hold on February 16, 2019.

The PDP lost political power after ruling the country for 16 years, having produced three presidents over the period, namely:  Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Musah Yar Adua and Goodluck Jonathan.

Already, President Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who upstaged the PDP-led government in 2015 has indicated his intention to seek a second term. Buhari had made his declaration after a prolonged silence on April 9 during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC.

The President reportedly said that having made wide consultations and conscious of the need to consolidate on his achievements in office, he had decided to stand for re-election, adding that he had been under tremendous pressure to make the declaration and felt it was courteous to first inform the NEC before going to town with it.

Earlier on March 1, the APC passed a vote of confidence in President Buhari, denying that it was not the same as endorsing the President for a second term.

The national chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, was recently reported to have endorsed the second term bid of President Buhari, saying as incumbent he had the right of first refusal of the party’s presidential ticket, but checks by Daily Trust on Sunday indicate that two others have also indicated interest in the APC’s presidential ticket in 2019.

Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, a United States-based Nigerian is one of them. On April 30, 2018 was reported to have been hosted by the Nigerian Union Diaspora, NUD, during which he declared his intention to vie for the Presidency of Nigeria on the platform of the APC.

Also, 35-year-old Adamu Garba, the Chief Executive Officer of IPI Solutions Nigeria Limited, a cloud computing company headquartered in Lagos had in April reportedly announced his interest to contest the presidential ticket of the APC.

It is believed that the Presidential ticket of the APC would be picked by the Buhari.

Among the presidential aspirants are eight from the main opposition PDP while the rest are drawn from other registered political parties. Nigeria currently has 68 registered political parties but with more applications by political associations pending before INEC, the number is likely to increase, an indication that more presidential aspirants may emerge ahead of the 2019 elections.

Prominent among those seeking presidential tickets on the platform of the PDP are a former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who formally declared his intention recently in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

At a rally in Yola, Adamawa State, Atiku vowed to unseat the APC government not only in Adamawa State but also at the federal level and reclaim them for the PDP.

According to him, Nigerians were disappointed with the APC-led government as the insecurity situation has worsened. He reportedly said: “In 1998, I took this state to the PDP. Today, I have returned to take what rightly belongs to the PDP.”

However, to slug it out with Buhari, Atiku would be jostling for the PDP presidential ticket with other PDP presidential aspirants like: former Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, former Governor Ahmed Makarfi of Kaduna State, Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe State, former Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State, former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State and the outgoing of of Ekiti State Ayodele Fayose.

Also seeking the PDP presidential ticket for 2019 is Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a former minister of Special Duties during president Goodluck Jonathan as well as Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies, a female Professor of Language and Communication Arts at the Rivers State University of Education. Adesanya-Davies officially joined politics as an ardent member of the ACCORD Party in Kwara State where she remained for years, until she moved to the PDP.

Other presidential aspirants outside the two major political parties include Professor Remi Sonaiya, a 2015 presidential candidate of the KOWA Party, who hopes to take another shot at the presidential election on the platform of the same party and Fela Durotoye, a consulting expert, leadership coach and public speaker and Tunde Fasua of Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP).

Some of the aspirants are yet to indicate the party on which platform they want to contest. List of presidential aspirants boxed.

Galadima: Buhari Didn’t Want Alliance With Tinubu… I Brought Them Together

Buba Galadima, Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), says the cosy relationship between President Muhammadu Buhari and the Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is an afterthought.

In a tell-all account in the current edition of The Interview magazine, Galadima said he was principally responsible for the alliance between the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), against Buhari’s wishes.

Buhari and Tinubu were the leaders of CPC and ACN, two of the five legacy parties that formed the APC in 2014.

“Buhari was the one against the alliance with Tinubu and I don’t want to say anything,” Galadima said. “Let Buhari deny what I have said. I was for it and I organised it and wrote a memo that even produced a candidate for the vice presidency, this same Osinbajo.”

Galadima gave a hint that Buhari may have, in fact, pencilled in another running mate candidate in the INEC form that was to have been submitted.

In a statement, the MD/Editor-In-Chief of The Interview, Azu Ishiekwene, described the Galadima interview as “the stuff of a broken love affair, with no closet details are spared”.

Using a slogan, ‘Anybody But Buhari (ABB)’, Galadima said he was planning to write an open letter to Buhari very soon, adding that the President is a “floored candidate” who will lose his deposit if he contests re-election.

“If he was raising cattle in Daura, I wouldn’t bother about him,” he said. “I’m criticising him because he’s the President of Nigeria and he’s not doing very well.”

He did not spare the Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, whom he described as a latter-day Buharist bent on hijacking the ship.

In the same edition, the Executive President of Women in Africa, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, said she suspects the autopsy conducted on her father, MKO Abiola, was inconclusive, because “not all poisons can be traced”, lending credence to suspicions that the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election may have been poisoned in detention.

Abiola-Costello shared the last conversation she had with her mother, Kudirat, before she was murdered, the impact of her parents’ death on the family, and family’s business, among others.

Also in the edition, the wife of the Kaduna State governor, Hajiya Hadiza El-Rufai, talked about her passion and role as wife, mother and first lady, saying, “my husband is too honest”
