There is palpable tension in Ikebiri community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State after armed thugs attacked Chief Kingdom Orio, the traditional ruler of the community.

The suspected thugs, numbering 30 and allegedly hired by the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Abiola Beredou, invaded the community during a peace meeting to resolve the accrimony over the disputed chairmanship of the youth leadership.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, turned bloody when the suspected thugs allegedly invaded the peace meeting and beat up the traditional chief. They also attacked those that attempted to resist the invasion.

A source said the arrival of military personnel stationed at Ogbeinbiri Oil Station in the Southern Ijaw Area prevented total breakdown of law and order.

“The suspected thugs invaded the Usaku Wari family meeting and they were led by the CDD Chairman of Ikebiri Kingdom, who was imposed on the community last December.

“Mr Abiola Beredou, the CDC Chairman of Ikebiri 1 community, who was imposed to the Kingdom by those who are claiming owners of the oil rich community, went into the peaceful family meeting with armed thugs and beat up Chief Kingdom Orio, who happens to be the family chief of Usaku Wari in Tamakuno Compound.

“The so-called CDC Chairman is from the same Usaku Warri Family. He was said to be angry because the family chief and other stakeholders who imposed Mr Abiola on the community decided to make peace with other family members, who have been aggrieved since the imposition of Mr Abiola on the community.

“Abiola came into the meeting with more than 30 armed thugs to invade the meeting. It tooks drastic efforts by the men of the JTF to calm down the situation. What a shame! 2019 :Okorocha Accused Udenwa, Archbishop For Supporting Uzodinma

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, on Monday lashed out at the Catholic Archbishop of the Owerri Diocese, Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, saying the cleric along with ex-governor Achike Udenwa; his kinsman, Ezekiel Izuogu; and a former chairman of the state Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, had pathological hatred for both the All Progressives Congress and President Muhammadu Buhari.

In the case of the Owerri Catholic Archbishop, the governor argued that he had never hidden his sympathy for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, which he said, was made public in 2015.

In a statement made available to our correspondent, Okorocha, through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, recalled that in 2015, the cleric openly threw his full weight behind the APGA governorship candidate, Captain Emma Iheanacho, and the then presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

“In 2015, Governor Rochas Okorocha took President Muhammadu Buhari to Archbishop Obinna when he came on a campaign. They met privately for hours but two days after, his newspaper (The Leader) came up with the caption. “The Alhaji in Government House” and told the false story of how Okorocha was taking Igbo youths to the north to be Islamised. The medium up till today has never seen any reason to give the APC and President Buhari a chance.”

Onwuemeodo, who dismissed the administration of former governor Achike Udenwa as a set back to the state, alleged that Dr Izuogu made fruitless efforts to govern the state and attributed this to his gimmick and the lack of sincerity of purpose, even as he justified the dethronement of Ilomuanya as both a traditional ruler and chairman state council of traditional rulers.

“So they are working together now in support of Hope Uzodinma, whose claim of being a member of the APC is not up to six months. And the PDP chieftains like Udenwa also supporting the senator. These people cannot love APC or President Buhari.”

Ex-Lagos Speaker, Pelumi, Nabbed For Murder

Police have arrested former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi, and others believed to be political thugs, for the alleged murder of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Akingboju Akindele, and the abduction of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

Akindele, attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Lagos State Command, was reportedly murdered when he led a team to Ijede area of Ikorodu to arrest four wanted cultists who had been on the police wanted list.

After the arrest, the DSP and his team were leading the cultists to their office when some members of the cult group ambushed the policemen.

The cultists shot Akindele dead, collected his rifle and abducted the ASP. But on their way to the bush where they were to bury the DSP, the ASP reportedly escaped and hid in the bush.

The state Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters, Ikeja, yesterday, said on October 27, a team of Anti-Cultism policemen attached to Area M, Ijede, were attacked while trying to effect arrest of some suspected cultists, in the process, the police officer, DSP Akindele, was killed, while a police ASP was abducted.

Edgal said investigation into the case led to the arrest of 49 suspects including the former Speaker, Pelumi.

He said: “The suspects were being investigated by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti Street, Yaba.

“The suspects were arrested inside Hon. Pelumi’s house at Ijede area of Ikorodu, where they hid after killing the police officer. When the news of the dastard killing of the policeman got to me, I quickly mobilised men who traced the hoodlums to the former speaker’s house and they were surprised to meet 49 cultists celebrating.

“The question is what would cultists, who murdered a DSP be doing in the speaker’s house? Why would he harbour cultists and thugs in his house? Why would he shield such persons that killed a senior police officer in his house? This is serious and we will not take it likely. We may charge the speaker for accessory to the fact of murder while other suspects will be charged for murder.”

The commissioner warned that the era of killing policemen was gone and that no one would kill a policeman and go scot free as the police would hunt the culprit to anywhere.

One of the suspects, who claimed to be an aide to the speaker, said he was arrested while doing his house chores.

He claimed that some people ran into the house, saying that the police were after them.

A police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said after escaping, the abducted ASP hid inside the bush to monitor the activities of the hoodlums and saw where they buried the rifle taken from the DSP.

“It was the ASP that took us to the riverside where they buried the rifle.

“Preliminary investigation showed that the gang was formidable and has held Ikorodu and its environs by the jugular. They have been operating with absolute confidence as they have big time politicians who are backing them.”

While parading other suspects, the police refused to bring Pelumi before journalists.

Meanwhile, some residents of Ijede yesterday marched on the SCIID at Panti to protest the arrest of the former speaker and others.

Speaking with our correspondent on the phone, Mrs Pelumi said they were in the house when the policemen scaled the fence into the house and arrested everyone.

She said: “Immediately the policemen entered the house, they destroyed everything on sight and collected my ATM, my husband’s phone, laptop, necklace and some other valuables.

“When my husband came out to ask what was happening, the policemen hit him with the butt of a gun and took him away. Now we have been at Panti waiting to see him and those arrested.

2019: Igbo To Produce Senate President, Says APC Scribe

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and Secretary of the party in Abia State, Perfect Okorie, has assured the people of the South East of the position of the Senate president to the region in 2019.

Speaking in Alayi, yesterday, at a rally organised by the youth wing of the party in the state, Okorie said the APC-led government, despite propaganda being sponsored by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has demonstrated genuine commitment to the development of the South East, in view of the number of projects being executed in the region.

This was even as prominent members of party in the region have been mobilising support at the grassroots for the second term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The people of Abia State have been suffering in the past few years due to bad governance, championed by the PDP-led state government.

“The time is now to redefine governance by bringing on board innovations and bold ideas that would translate into all-round development of the state.

“We are tired of lies, falsehood and selfishness. Abians deserve a new breath come 2019.

“The ideals of the APC are anchored on probity, transparency and accountability.

“The falsehood being disseminated by selfish politicians in the South East that President Buhari does not like Ndigbo is unpatriotic.

“The 69 on-going projects across the five states in the South-East are testament to the determination of the Federal Government to uplift the South East to enviable heights.

“The President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has rehabilitated and constructed more roads and bridges in the region than any previous government.

“These projects include the rehabilitation of the existing Niger Bridge as well as the construction of the second Niger bridge.

“In Abia State, the federal government projects include the rehabilitation of Nkporo-Abariba-Ohafia road, renovation of Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia road, upgrading of Bende-Afam-Ohafia-Arochukwu road (Section 1 and 11), construction of Ahiakwu-Amangwo-Umuahia-Ngwa road, emergency repairs of failed sections in Umuahia-Ariam-Ikot Ekpene road. Other are rehabilitation and reconstruction of Enugu-Porth Harcourt Dual Carriageway (Sections 1 and 11) and construction of Olokoro-Isiala-Oboro-Nnono junction road, among many others.
