2019 Poll: Atiku Met Wike Ahead Of Campaign Kick Off.

Ahead of the opening of his campaign today, Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) presidential candidate  Atiku Abubakar yesterday met with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who resigned as the Southsouth co-ordinator of the campaign.

Atiku was begging Wike, assuring the governor that he will henceforth be involved in key campaign decisions.

The governor said he had no grouses against Atiku, but the leadership of the PDP which was trying to sideline him.

Wike may today rescind his decision to resign as the Southsouth Coordinator of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

Wike has ruled out leaving PDP, said a cabinet source.

Atiku may also reconcile  the leadership of the party and Wike on issues raised by the governor.

But Atiku’s Special Assistant, Public Communications, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, said: “The PCC is intact; there is no cause for alarm.”

He insisted that the purported resignation of Wike was “speculative”.

A source, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the meeting. He said: “Atiku and Wike met on Sunday (yesterday) in Abuja and they had fruitful and frank discussions. We are good to go with our campaign as from Monday (today).

“The governor used the opportunity to list his grouses against the leadership of PDP, especially the emerging trend of marginalising him in key decisions connected with the campaign.

“At the session, Atiku promised to address the challenges identified by Wike and he also assured him that he will facilitate a reconciliation with the party hierarchy.

“Atiku implored him to withdraw his purported resignation by putting the nation, 2019 poll battle and the interest of the party above other interests.

“Based in the soothing words from Atiku, the governor may today rescind his decision to resign as the party’s Southsouth coordinator.”

An executive council source in Rivers State, who spoke in confidence, said: “I have not been able to link up with the governor today but one thing is certain, Governor Nyesom Wike will not leave PDP no matter how rough the situation is.”

“The so-called deepening face-off between Atiku and Wike should be regarded as  a mere cliche,  figment of the imagination of the writers of such fiction, because there is nothing as such.

“ Governor Wike’s purported resignation as Southsouth PDP Presidential campaign co-ordinator is still in the realm of speculation.

“Wike is a solid and unshakable PDP leader. His contributions to the survival and sustenance of the party to become the formidable force it is today have been unsurpassed.

“As a total party man,  his first priority in the 2019 election is to secure Rivers state for the PDP and he knows that with the Presidential election coming first, all hands must be on deck and no stone must be left unturned to ensure that the bandwagon effect of a PDP presidential election victory will flow into his own governorship election in March.

“However, should the speculation of his resignation as a regional campaign coordinator have any real meaning, then Governor Wike must have very good and impeccable reasons for his decision which must be in the overall interest of the party

Benson Enikuomehin, the SSA on Oil and Gas to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, has resigned his position.

Benson Enikuomehin, the Senior Special Assistant on Oil and Gas to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, has resigned his position.

Enikuomehin resigned his position in a letter dated November 30, 2018, signed and addressed to the Governor.

SaharaReporters obtained the copy of the resignation letter, which was routed through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

In the letter, Enikuomehin did not state the reason for his resignation, but our correspondent learnt that his resignation may be connected to the crisis rocking Akeredolu’s cabinet.

Efforts to reach Enikuomehin for comments proved abortive, as all his phone lines were switched off as of press time.

However, a source close to him confirmed hthe resignation to SaharaReporters, saying: “Yes, he has resigned and the resignation letter is not fake. It is real and that is his signature.

“There are many issues going on in this government that people don’t know. You are a journalist and I know you should have your nose, ears and eyes in the goverment of Akeredolu who has turned his cabinet into a family business.

“His wife (Betty-Akeredolu) and son have taken over almost everything in the state. All the contracts are now being awarded either to his wife, son and even in-laws. Mostly in the OSOPADEC office, the Governor’s wife and son are in charge of all the contracts. They do not allow the people in the ministries or parastatals of the government to carry out their work.

“If there is any project or contract in the state, you wil see the Governor’s wife and his son coming in through their pseudo companies to collect the contracts.

“They are the only ones milking the state and the Governor cannot say anything. Even the commissioners cannot talk, because the SAs under them are loyalists of Mr. Governor.

“This is not how to run a government. Akeredolu doesn’t know how to run government and let me tell you that Enikuomehin’s resignation is just the latest to come in this cabinet.

19 Children Drowned In Kwara Boat Accident

the weekend. Although the police said they were yet to receive an accurate figure of the incident, local sources claimed that the affected boat was conveying 22 passengers while only two were rescued. It was learnt that the victims were on their way to a traditional wedding ceremony on Saturday at a community in Niger State and needed to cross the River Niger.

The boat was said to have capsized while crossing the river. A local source lamented that all efforts to rescue other passengers, apart from the two, proved abortive. He said: “As at yesterday (Saturday) evening, four corpses have been recovered from the river. Effort would resume this morning (yesterday) to find others.

“Men of the Nigeria Police and the State Fire Service were there on Saturday in the rescue mission. Unfortunately only two of them survived.” When contacted, the Secretary of the Lafiagi Traditional Council, Alhaji Sulyman Aliyu, confirmed the incident but said he could not give accurate figure of casualties as rescue efforts were still ongoing. He said: “From what we have gathered, they are up to 12.

The figure is between 12 and that 19 that you said.”Aliyu noted that four bodies were recovered on Saturday. In his own reaction, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ajayi Okasanmi, who also confirmed the incident, told our correspondent his office was yet to be briefed on the casualty figure. Okasanmi, however, explained that officers and men of the command and other security agencies had joined the local government council to recover the victims.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has commiserated with the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Saadu Kawu Haliru, over the death of some Lafiagi indigenes in the boat accident at the Chewuru Ferry Port. The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Abdulwahab Oba, described the incident as unfortunate and a great loss to their immediate family, the emirate and the state at large.

He said: “I deeply sympathise empathise with the Emir, the good people of Lafiagi and the family of the victims.” Ahmed urged families of the victims to take solace in the fact that death “is an inevitable end of all mortals.” The governor prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give the families and the entire Lafiagi Emirate the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Emefiele(CBN): $21bn Saved From Food Importation

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said $21 billion was saved from the cut in food importation between January 2015 and October 2018.

The governor said this on Friday at the annual bankers’ dinner held in Lagos.

According to Emefiele, Nigeria’s monthly food import bill fell from $665.4million to $160.4million between 2015 and 2018.

He said the reductions in food import were recorded on rice, fish, milk, sugar and wheat, adding that the policy would be maintained.

His words: “Noticeable declines were steadily recorded in our monthly food import bill from $665.4million in January 2015 to $160.4million as at October 2018; a cumulative fall of 75.9 per cent and an implied savings of over $21bn on food imports alone over that period.

“Most evident were the 97.3 per cent cumulative reduction in monthly rice import bills; 99.6 per cent in fish; 81.3 per cent in milk; 63.7 per cent in sugar, and 60.5 per cent in wheat.

“We are glad with the accomplishments recorded so far. Accordingly, this policy is expected to continue with vigour until the underlying imbalances within the Nigerian economy have been fully resolved.”

While speaking on development finance, he said that in continued recognition of its role as an agent of development and aimed at ensuring self-sufficiency to reduce Nigeria’s excessive dependence on imports, the CBN invigorated its development finance activities.

“We have maintained a particular focus on supporting farmers, entrepreneurs as well as small and medium scale businesses, through our various intervention programmes such as the Anchor Borrowers Programme, Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending and the National Collateral Registry,” he added.
