2019: Obasanjo, Atiku, Secondus Met, Renew Strategies

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, met in Abuja on Tuesday in Abuja, THE PUNCH learnt last night.

The meeting was also attended by the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, amongst a few others who were said to have been carefully selected for the meeting.

Sources close to the meeting told our correspondents that the meeting was based on the strategies that would enable  Atiku and the PDP emerge winners in the general elections.

It was also gathered that the meeting reviewed the ongoing zonal campaigns of the party, which was said to be a precursor for the state-by-state campaign that would follow.

It was also gathered that the former president used the opportunity of the meeting to settle the rift between Atiku and a former Governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako (retd.).

Nyako, who is a former Chief of Naval Staff, was a member of the PDP before he defected to the All Progressives Congress.

However, instead of returning to the PDP like Atiku after their disagreements with the national leadership of the ruling party, Nyako and his son, Senator Abdul-Aziz Nyako, joined the African Democratic Congress.

The former president was said to have been worried about the cacophony of voices from the home state of Atiku in particular about his presidential ambition and decided to step in and settle the rifts.

Apart from Nyako, it was also learnt that Obasanjo intervened in the alleged misunderstanding between Atiku and his former aide while serving as the Vice President, Dr Umar Ardo.

A source privy to the meeting said, “It was a family and an elaborate meeting.  Baba  (Obasanjo) is a fantastic leader. I have never seen such a man who combines energy with intellect and political sagacity.

“He spoke at length to everyone, including the Waziri (Atiku) and others that were there.

“He had successfully settled the rift between Atiku and Nyako and the disagreements between Atiku and Ardo.  Now, we have Adamawa to take because all the power brokers are behind us.”

When contacted on the meeting,  Secondus declined to give details.

Rather, he said the leadership of the party would always meet to strategise ahead of the election.

Meanwhile, opposition political parties on Tuesday expressed doubt over the readiness of President Muhammadu Buhari to accept the outcome of the 2019 presidential election whichever way it goes.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, had in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria said the 2019 election was not a matter of life-or-death for Buhari, because he would be happy to accept the verdict of the electorate.

But the Social Democratic Party and the All Progressives Grand Alliance in separate interviews with our correspondents said there were no proofs so far that Buhari would do as Onyeama promised.

The National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Mr Alfa Mohammed, told one of our correspondents that the statement credited to Onyeama was contrary to an earlier statement credited to the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazzau.

Mohammed recalled that Dambazzau had been quoted as saying that the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, would suffer a bloodied nose in the election.

He said the statement by Dambazzau, whose ministry is in charge of internal security, was an indication that the government was ready to unleash security agents on the opposition.

I Will No Longer Complain Past Administration – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says he has resolved to stop complaining about the problems his administration inherited when it came into office.

Buhari said he “asked for it” by relentlessly vying for office four times before emerging president in 2015.

He made the comments while speaking with a cross-section of Nigerians in Poland on the sidelines of the global summit on Climate Change.

The president said: “We inherited so many problems. Actually, I have said I will not complain because I asked for it. I tried to become President three times and I lost, but I was lucky the fourth time, I became one, so I can’t complain”

“Who asked me to do it again? Three times I ended up in the Supreme Court. The third time, I said, ‘God dey’ and the fourth time, God and technology, using the permanent voter card and the card readers, they couldn’t rig the elections; so I won.”

Speaking on the security situation in the country, Buhari said significant progress has been made in the war against insurgency.

He said Boko Haram insurgents have been able to launch attacks in recent months because “they know the area more than the soldiers”.

Buhari said: “Those in the north-east will tell you that before we came, the so-called Boko Haram used to hold about 17 local governments. Now, physically, they are not holding any local government. So they have resorted to real guerilla tactics of hit and run.

“They mobilise, hit targets and then disappear again because they know the area more than the soldiers that are defending them. Our soldiers are from Port Harcourt, Lagos, Sokoto, but they are locally there and know the terrain more than the soldiers.”

Breaking News:Lawmakers Take To Their Heels As Protesting Staff Shut Down National Assembly

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has shut down the National Assembly complex over non payment of their salary and promotion arrears.

The workers are demanding the implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), which has been stopped since 2010. The staff said that the Salary and Wages Commission had approved the money and passed into law by the two chambers. They insisted that money had been paid into National Assembly account but the management refused to pay them.

The placard-carrying workers blocked the entrance to the both chambers, and occupied the lobby of the complex demanding the resignation of the clerk to the National Assembly, Sani Omolori .

Legislative activities at the complex have been paralysed. Some of the lawmakers who ran into the protest took to their heels to avoid been manhandled by the mob, who were chanting: “Go home, no sitting; go home,  no sitting.”

The workers had on Wednesday during their emergency congress vowed to picket the building of the highest lawmaking body in the country unless the management address their demands.

As of the time of this report, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, had not arrived at the complex.

Kogi Govt Accused Melaye Of Planning Mayhem

The Kogi State Government has alleged there are “covert plans by Senator Dino Melaye to cause mayhem and bloodshed in Kogi State.”

A statement issued on Monday in Lokoja by the spokesman for the governor, Kingsley Fanwo, stated that the office of the State Security Adviser had uncovered “orchestrated plan to destabilise the state.

He said Melaye, senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, was set to disturb the peace of the state through violence in the name of political campaigns.

“According to the highly credible report, the senator is planning to visit the Kupa area in the Lokoja Local Government Area to launch campaign of calumny against the government of Kogi State. The choice of Kupa was informed by the solid support of the APC in the area.

“It is expected that the people will resist the use of ‘Dino language’ on the government, which will lead to attack on the defenceless people by the armed thugs which Dino is planning to convey to the place.

“The intelligence also revealed that the thugs to be imported from a neighbouring state where a political godfather just lost a House of Reps election, are to wear black T-Shirts with the inscription, ‘DSS’ to create an impression that they are security operatives. The thugs are to be conveyed in a white Hilux vehicle.  A notorious thug from Lokoja has also been co-opted into the Satanic plan.”

Fanwo said Melaye, like every other candidate, had the right to campaign for votes but urged the senator to honour the “process for peaceful campaigns” by dealing with constituted authorities charged with the responsibility of ensuring peaceful campaigns.

“A lawmaker cannot continue to be a law-breaker. We are not stopping anyone from peaceful campaigns but government will not tolerate plans that will threaten the lives of the citizens in the name of politics. Kogi State Government values life more than politics.”

Efforts to get Melaye to react to the allegations through phone calls proved abortive. He also did not respond to a message sent via WhatsApp as of the time of filing this report

2019: INEC Warns Incumbents Against Using State Resources

warned incumbent office holders against using state resources or apparatuses for their campaigns or against their opponents.

Yakubu sounded the caution yesterday in Abuja at a lecture: “Political corruption and other emerging issues for the 2019 elections”,  organised by the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) in partnership with Christian Voice to the People (V2P) and Hope Givers Initiative (HOG-I).

He noted that the commission has the power to monitor campaign financing and sources of funds according to the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

Yakubu, who was represented by a National Commissioner, Prof. Antonia Okoosi-Simbine, noted that the commission, in line with its powers as provided in Section F(15) in the Third Schedule of the Constitution, is well-positioned to, among others, monitor the campaign and finances of political parties for the 2019 general elections.

He added: “Another interesting area of campaign finance spending to watch out for is the use of state administrative resources by incumbents, particularly now that the campaigns have fully kicked off. Section 100 (2) of the EA provides that ‘state apparatus shall not be employed to the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or candidate at any election’.”

TMG Chairperson Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, in her remarks, expressed worries over the developments around the 2019 elections, saying experience from the off-cycle elections have shown widespread manifestation of political corruption, possibilities of widespread electoral violence, vote-buying and voters’ inducements.

“The implication or impact of vote-buying on Nigeria’s maturing democracy is well-traversed. There cannot be free or right choices of candidates with such ominous practices in such an environment. Such elections are simply for the highest bidder or the candidate with the deepest pocket without regard to competence or merit. Such electoral system has been observed to be incapable of producing a transparent government,” she said.

She said the TMG plan to release a report, titled: “‘Market place democracy and Nigeria’s electoral process: An analysis of the dimensions of political corruption and its implications on Nigeria’s democratisation process”, which will bring to fore how these tendencies manifest in the nation’s electoral system by the middle of December.

On her part, the Executive Director, HOG-I Mrs. Onyeka Udegbunam urged politicians and other stakeholders place national unity above personal interest to ensure the success of the 2019 elections.

A security expert and lecturer from University of Ibadan, Prof. Albert Olawale, however, warned that Nigeria’s present structure requires that the country has to be careful going into 2019 elections.

He said Nigeria is presently conflict-genic and that if care is not taken, the 2019 elections might be the trigger.

A Senior Fellow at the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, who spoke on “2019 General Elections and the threat of transactional politics and other related matters”, warned electorates against vote-buying under any disguise, saying this would continue to worsen the situation.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris said the increasing rate of vote-buying, rigging, act of thuggery, flash points of electoral violence, ballot box snatching small arms and light weapons, militant groups as potential threats to the 2019 elections.

Idris, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police, Federal Operatives, Force Headquarters, Keneth Ebrisem, however, assured that to checkmate the activities of thugs, profiling of their leaders, sponsors, sympathisers and their locations is ongoing

2019 Poll: Atiku Met Wike Ahead Of Campaign Kick Off.

Ahead of the opening of his campaign today, Peoples Democratic Party( PDP) presidential candidate  Atiku Abubakar yesterday met with Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who resigned as the Southsouth co-ordinator of the campaign.

Atiku was begging Wike, assuring the governor that he will henceforth be involved in key campaign decisions.

The governor said he had no grouses against Atiku, but the leadership of the PDP which was trying to sideline him.

Wike may today rescind his decision to resign as the Southsouth Coordinator of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

Wike has ruled out leaving PDP, said a cabinet source.

Atiku may also reconcile  the leadership of the party and Wike on issues raised by the governor.

But Atiku’s Special Assistant, Public Communications, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, said: “The PCC is intact; there is no cause for alarm.”

He insisted that the purported resignation of Wike was “speculative”.

A source, who spoke in confidence, confirmed the meeting. He said: “Atiku and Wike met on Sunday (yesterday) in Abuja and they had fruitful and frank discussions. We are good to go with our campaign as from Monday (today).

“The governor used the opportunity to list his grouses against the leadership of PDP, especially the emerging trend of marginalising him in key decisions connected with the campaign.

“At the session, Atiku promised to address the challenges identified by Wike and he also assured him that he will facilitate a reconciliation with the party hierarchy.

“Atiku implored him to withdraw his purported resignation by putting the nation, 2019 poll battle and the interest of the party above other interests.

“Based in the soothing words from Atiku, the governor may today rescind his decision to resign as the party’s Southsouth coordinator.”

An executive council source in Rivers State, who spoke in confidence, said: “I have not been able to link up with the governor today but one thing is certain, Governor Nyesom Wike will not leave PDP no matter how rough the situation is.”

“The so-called deepening face-off between Atiku and Wike should be regarded as  a mere cliche,  figment of the imagination of the writers of such fiction, because there is nothing as such.

“ Governor Wike’s purported resignation as Southsouth PDP Presidential campaign co-ordinator is still in the realm of speculation.

“Wike is a solid and unshakable PDP leader. His contributions to the survival and sustenance of the party to become the formidable force it is today have been unsurpassed.

“As a total party man,  his first priority in the 2019 election is to secure Rivers state for the PDP and he knows that with the Presidential election coming first, all hands must be on deck and no stone must be left unturned to ensure that the bandwagon effect of a PDP presidential election victory will flow into his own governorship election in March.

“However, should the speculation of his resignation as a regional campaign coordinator have any real meaning, then Governor Wike must have very good and impeccable reasons for his decision which must be in the overall interest of the party

Benson Enikuomehin, the SSA on Oil and Gas to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, has resigned his position.

Benson Enikuomehin, the Senior Special Assistant on Oil and Gas to Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, has resigned his position.

Enikuomehin resigned his position in a letter dated November 30, 2018, signed and addressed to the Governor.

SaharaReporters obtained the copy of the resignation letter, which was routed through the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

In the letter, Enikuomehin did not state the reason for his resignation, but our correspondent learnt that his resignation may be connected to the crisis rocking Akeredolu’s cabinet.

Efforts to reach Enikuomehin for comments proved abortive, as all his phone lines were switched off as of press time.

However, a source close to him confirmed hthe resignation to SaharaReporters, saying: “Yes, he has resigned and the resignation letter is not fake. It is real and that is his signature.

“There are many issues going on in this government that people don’t know. You are a journalist and I know you should have your nose, ears and eyes in the goverment of Akeredolu who has turned his cabinet into a family business.

“His wife (Betty-Akeredolu) and son have taken over almost everything in the state. All the contracts are now being awarded either to his wife, son and even in-laws. Mostly in the OSOPADEC office, the Governor’s wife and son are in charge of all the contracts. They do not allow the people in the ministries or parastatals of the government to carry out their work.

“If there is any project or contract in the state, you wil see the Governor’s wife and his son coming in through their pseudo companies to collect the contracts.

“They are the only ones milking the state and the Governor cannot say anything. Even the commissioners cannot talk, because the SAs under them are loyalists of Mr. Governor.

“This is not how to run a government. Akeredolu doesn’t know how to run government and let me tell you that Enikuomehin’s resignation is just the latest to come in this cabinet.

Breaking News:Labour Party Presidential Candidate Steps Down And Endorsed President Buhari

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, a frontline Presidential contender on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), Sam Nwanti, has withdrawn from the presidential race in support of President Muhammadu Buhari re-election.

The American-based detective from Mbieri, in the Mbaitoli Council Area of Imo State dropped his ambition in an interactive session with newsmen in Owerri.

Nwanti disclosed that he withdrew from the race to boost the re-election bid of President Buhari in the 2019 elections, while he prepares for the 2023 presidential race.

“Today, I withdraw from contesting for the presidential race on the platform of Labour party and back to APC.

“I am back to APC to support President Buhari for his second term bid because he needs our support to get things aright once again. I will help All Progressives Congress and Buhari led administration fight corruption and as the only detective who is contesting in 2019, it may split the support of President Muhammadu Buhari,” he added.

He stressed that his withdrawal from the race is solely anchored on supporting President Buhari in fighting corruption in Nigeria for the second time

Breaking News:Nasarawa State Deputy Dumped APC To PDP (Photos)

As the 2019 general elections approach, a Deputy Speaker who worked for the victory of APC in 2015 has denounced the ruling party in Nigeria, and has since joined the opposition pdp party in Nasarawa state.

PoliticsNGR gathered that Rt. Hon. Barr. Bala Rabo Ayaga, Deputy Speaker, Nasarawa State House Assembly defected to PDP with his large number of supporters. He claims that the APC was no longer a party that could lead Nigeria and Nigerians to the promise land. He added that the APC as a party they had tirelessly supported and worked for, performed far below their expectations.

Hon. Ayaga also made it known that, PDP of yesterday was ‘better than APC of today, adding that the PDP of today is more organised and well grounded to take over the leadership of the nation since APC has woefully failed’ .For these reasons and so many reasons that time could not permit them to speak out at the time they were been received, have prompted them to return to PDP the rightful place they belong to.

Among the key personalities who joined him to denounce APC were Hon. Labi Osugebo, former deputy chairman Kokona LGA, Alh. Kanko Madage Bayero, Alh. Dauda Odumagbe, Hon. Musa Inaloko, a one time commissioner with the Nasarawa State Government, Alh. Suleiman Wabai, an APC House of Assembly aspirant.

Others were, Hon. Akajo A. Gyara, Hon. Alh. Usman Isa, Alh. Dauda Osaga, former DPM Agwada Development Area, and over five thousand of their supporters from APC from Agwada Development Area.

Hon. Prince Francis Enokela Orogu, the state PDP Chairman who received them, gave them the assurance on behalf of the entire PDP family in Nigeria, that they have been accepted as members. He equally guaranteed them of working together to the success of the party in the forthcoming general elections.

Coquettes Like Hon. Nonso Eze Hiding behind Engr Arthur Eze to perpetuate the stranglehold On Dunukofia politics

Coquettes like Nonso Eze are hiding behind Engr Arthur to perpetuate their stranglehold on Dunukofia Constituency and it is a sad development. Like grand masters of the game , they coquettishly orchestrate a back-and-forth movement between hope and frustration to the bewilderment of the masses.

They (Nonso and his cohorts) bait with promise of reward, the hope of physical pleasure, happiness, fame by association, power-all of which , however, proves elusive; yet this only makes their targets pursue them more.

Coquettes appear self-sufficient. They do not need you, they seem to say, and their narcissism proves devilishly attractive.

You want to conquer them but they hold the cards. The strategy of the coquette is never to offer total satisfaction.

Imitate the alternating heat and coolness of the coquette and you will keep the seduced at their heels.

A famous author of a classical book assisted me in describing who Nonso Eze is and his mission to use the influence of Engr Arthur Eze to destroy Dunukofia Constituency.

Let me ask, who got Hon Nonso Eze deluded that he won the APGA primary election in Dunukofia Constituency? What is his motivation for fighting our great party APGA and the entire Constituency?

I am making it clear to both friend and foe I am number one fan of Engr Arthur Eze; I do celebrate him often on Social Media. A man with a golden heart, down to earth and humane should not get it wrong when it comes to Dunukofia affairs all because of some disgruntled psychophants in the guise of his political advisers.

Engr Arthur Eze is adored today by these elements because of his generous disposition and content laden pocket. He now becomes their parvus deus ( small chi) because they delight in deceptive milking.

Let me inform our great man, Engr Arthur Eze, to note that these men of Lilliput, these political jobbers are all wolves in sheep’s clothing bent on spoiling your good name and image.

These men fight Hon. Law Ezeudu because he bluntly refused to share constituency money to them. As the chief whip of the State Assembly our law maker chose to embark on laudable and verifiable projects spiced with practical attention to human development in every town within the constituency.

In consequence and in total recognition of his developmental strides, the entire APGA Dunukofia elected him as their candidate for Anambra State House of Assembly, Dunukofia Constituency, 2019.

One good turn, they say, deserves another.

Press Release:PDP Holds Presidential Campaign Rally In Sokoto On Monday

…To Focus on Issues, Widen Consultations

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says its Monday’s North West Presidential Zonal Rally billed for Sokoto, Sokoto State, will focus on issues as well as address the concerns, plights, fears and aspirations of Nigerians in the geo-political zone, in line with the policy document of its Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The PDP Presidential campaign will use the rally to touch base with leaders in the geo-political zone on further consultations on the national consensus to rescue our nation from the misrule of the Muhammadu Buhari Presidency and the dysfunctional All Progressives Congress (APC).

The campaign notes that the North west bears heavy imprints of neglect by President Buhari’s administration, adding that the President and the APC cannot point to any key development project articulated and completed by it in the last three and half years, despite the huge resources it claims to have channeled to the zone.

The campaign revealed that the zone is hugely disappointed in President Buhari, who had failed to fulfill any of his 2015 campaign promises even as it is piqued by his 2019 ‘next level’ campaign mantra which shows Mr. President’s lack of remorse for his failures.

It notes that the North West zone has completely lost confidence in President Buhari and is now rallying with the PDP’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who has demonstrated an unrivaled competence and political will to reposition the nation and return her to the path of national cohesion and economic prosperity.

Finally the campaign appreciates the entire people of the North West geo-political zone and Nigerians in general for the unprecedented outpouring of goodwill, prayers and support for Atiku Abubakar, since his popular emergence as the party’s Presidential candidate.

‘I Will Defeat Sanwo-olu Flat In 2019’ – Agbaje Boasts

The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Governorship Candidate in Lagos, State, Mr Jimi Agbaje, says he will beat All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu, flat in the 2019 election.

Agbaje expressed the confidence while addressing his supporters at the formal declaration of his ambition in Lagos.

He said 2019 would be a year of victory for him, after two failed attempts.

Lagos is a stronghold of the APC and though over 40 candidates from different parties are eying the state’s governorship seat in 2019, APC’s Sanwo-olu and PDP’s Agbaje are believed to be major contenders.

Agbaje promised to shock the APC and its candidate in the election.

“I will beat the APC in 2019; mark my words, I will not only beat them, I will beat them flat. I am sure of winning because Lagosians are behind me.

“The support we were given in 2015 is still there, intact. We will expand on it in 2019. I am in the race because I am passionate about Lagos.

“I hear them calling me their customer because of my past attempts, but I tell them, the customer is King. By next year, we shall know the results. But I can assure you once again that I will beat them flat,” he said.

The governorship candidate said the APC had failed the state in all the ramifications, calling on residents to vote out the party for lack of progress.

He said he had the capacity, the experience and sincerity to deliver the Lagos of everybody’s dream, if elected.

The attention of the National Leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has been drawn to some Media reports doing the round, emanating from a so called Press Conference by one Chief (Deacon) Jerry Obasi and Alhaji A. D. Musa, claiming to be respectively the National Chairman and National Secretary of an imaginary faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, called Authentic-APGA. calling on the National Chairman and the National Leader of APGA to resign their positions forthwith, among other uncomplimentary remarks and unfounded  insinuations.

However, ordinarily the party would have ignored their childish rantings, innuendos and shenanigans, since  both of them had been expelled from the party at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Awka, on December 21, 2016 for gross misconduct and anti-party activities, which had been their stock in trade over time.

There are no records anywhere of their readmission into the party neither do they hold any Executive positions to warrant the claim of the positions they ascribed to themselves. Their action was premeditated and targeted causing confusion and disaffection in the party for pecuniary gains. This is a practice they had been associated with at various times in the past long before their expusion.

The party calls on security agencies to  arrest and prosecute them immediately for impersonation and name-dropping.

PDP Campaign Council: Pressure On Wike To Rescind Resignation

Following the resignation of the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, as the South-South zonal coordinator of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council yesterday, intense pressure has been mounted on him to rescind his decision, Sunday Sun authoritatively gathered.

Our sister publication, Saturday Sun, had broken the news that the Rivers governor would tender his letter of resignation yesterday, an action considered by many would cause a major upset to the presidential campaign of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Sunday Sun reliably gathered that PDP bigwigs and the allies of the presidential candidate of the party had quickly reached out to Governor Wike, urging him to reconsider his stand for the interest of the party.

It was not certain yesterday whether Wike has accepted their pleas.

The Rivers governor was in October named zonal coordinator along side Ayo Fayose, Aminu Tambuwal, Ibrahim Dankwambo, Samuel Ortom, and Dave Umahi with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as Director-General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council.

Specifically, Governor Aminu Tambuwal is in charge of Northwest, Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, Northeast; Governor Samuel Ortom, North-Central; Governor Dave Umahi, Southeast; Governor Nyesom Wike, South-South and former Governor Ayodele Fayose, Southwest.

Sunday Sun reliably gathered that Wike was angered by the way vital decisions and appointments were carried out without consultations of party leaders.

Oshibote Emerged New OPC Leader As Fasheun Dies At 83

The Odua People’s Congress (OPC) yesterday got a new national president following the death of its founder and national president, Dr Frederick Fasheun.

The new president, Prince Oshibote Oodua, was announced at Century Hotel, Okota, Lagos, where members of the congress gathered in their numbers to mourn the passage of their former leader.

Dr. Fasheun died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH in the early hours of Saturday. According to the eldest child of the former OPC leader, Kayode Fasheun, the late OPC national president took ill briefly during the week before he

“He was sick for a short time and was taken to the hospital on Wednesday and discharged on Thursday. But then, we had to take him back, he hadn’t left the hospital for too long before a little relapse so we he had to go back. He was admitted at the ICU. He later became stable and we thought he was going to survive. But around 1.00 am today we got the sad news that he couldn’t make it,” he said.

Describing him as a caring father who wanted the best for everybody, Kayodesaidhislate father didn’t show any premonition before his demise, saying his death was sudden and shocking to the family. “I know that he lost a younger brother in March this year, he was the closest person to him but I don’t know whether that was a factor or it was old age. In fact he was very fine the whole of last week and the week before,” he recalled.

According to the young Fasheun, the late OPC leader is survived by a wife and six children; five sons and a daughter.

The Personal Assistant to the late national leader and founder of the group, Otunba Tunde Thompson, who also expressed shock at Dr. Fasheun’s demise said although the late OPC leader was 83 years old, he was still active, a development which he said made his death more surprising to the members of the group.

“Baba was 83 years-old going to 84, but be who he was, you either find him in his hotel, at his hospital or at project sites. So, we didn’t believe anything would happen to him at this point in time. The doctor advised him to rest and he was at home for two days and that was it,” he said.

Giving more insight on the emergence of Prince Oshibote as the new national president of the group, Otunba Thomson said, “ the Oodua People’s Congress, being a militant group has its rules that within the next 24 hours of the demise of its leader, a new leader must emerge and that was what they have done today. This, coupled with the instruction laid down by Dr. Frederick Fasheun that somebody must succeed him immediately, he had been in consultation with executive members on whom to succeed him and that is what has been done today. They have chosen Prince Oshinbote as Dr. Fasheun’s successor. They appointed him today and he has been shown to members of the sect who are present here today.

Although, Oshibote was not the highest-ranking chieftain of the group, Sunday Sun gathered that his emergence did not come as a major surprise to members of the congress.

EU Committed £100m To Nigeria Elections

The European Union (EU) has revealed that it has committed over £100 million to the conduct of important elections in Nigeria from the Fourth Republic in 1999 to date.

EU’s Electoral Administration and Communication expert, Manji Wilson, made this disclosure while presenting a paper: “Overview of the EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria,” at the two-day capacity building programme for journalists organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

He explained that the funds were spent on providing technical assistance for the elections.

He, however, warned that the body has no preferred candidate among all the presidential candidates in the 2019 general elections, insisting that the EU has no iota of influence on who wins the elections.

He decried the outrageous amounts most of the political parties were charging candidates for the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms, regretting that the conduct had denied Nigerian youths active participation in the 2019 elections. He regretted that out of thousands of them seeking elective positions, only 219 eventually got the nomination of their parties for the 2019 general elections.

APGA(INTRUDERS) Faction Threatened Obiano To Resign For Endorsing Buhari

A faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance on Friday emerged in Abuja with a call on the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, to resign for single-handedly endorsing President Muhhamadu Buhari for the 2019 elections.

The governor had in a video, which went viral, reportedly endorsed the President during the public presentation of a book to commemorate the 80th birthday of a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, despite having Gen. John Gbor (retd).as its presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential poll.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, chairman of the new group under the aegis of Authentic APGA, Chief Jerry Obasi, said the governor had brought APGA to ridicule, odium and made it a laughing stock in the eyes of reasonable Nigerians.

He accused Obiano of anti-party activities and breach of Article 22(2D) of the party’s constitution.

Obasi said his members must have to decide whether to continue on the “evil trajectory of impunity and political villainy or adopt a strategic template to guarantee the revival of the fundamental ideas that propelled the formation of APGA.”

According to him, the original and foundational ideology of APGA was that it should be inclusive and guarantee the rights of members to express themselves in line with democratic principles.

He, however, said that it was obvious from prevailing circumstances that the party had derailed and lost the moral compass that endeared it to marginalised Nigerians.

Obasi said, “There is urgent need, therefore, for loyal and genuine members of the party to embark on a programme that would bring back the party to the original ideas. This programme would involve the reconciliation and unification of all those that fought through thick and thin to ensure that APGA serves the purpose of political emancipation of all oppressed people.”

Rowdy Session:Assembly Members Engaged In Heavy Fight(Picture)

The struggle by factions of the Anambra State House of Assembly to take possession of the seat of the Speaker is currently causing a fight in the hallowed chambers.

Both factions of the House, led by their separate Speakers had arrived the State Assembly complex at about 10am in the morning, but could not sit for plenary because of the tussle over which of the two Speakers should preside over the meeting.

About 12 out of the 30 members of the House had three weeks ago impeached Speaker Rita Maduagwu, replacing her with Hon. Ikem Uzoezie. But Maduagwu had quickly denied being impeached, while the Uzoezie faction insisted she remained impeached.

This had led to the sealing of the House by police authorities to forestall any breach of peace.

But at about 10:30pm on Wednesday, police unsealed the complex ahead of Thursday sitting, but, both factions iwent nside to administer the House.

Maduagwu had first entered the hallowed chambers and sat on the Speaker’s seat, but later left when she found that only two of her supporters were present.

As about 2:30pm when she returned to preside over the House, Uzoezie had already taken the Speaker’s seat, refusing to give way for Maduagwu, causing a huge uproar in the House.

Two members, Hon Obinna Emenaka, and a pro Maduagwu lawmaker who recently suffered a vehicle accident, however, engaged a pro Uzoezie lawmaker, Romanus Obi, in a fight but members rallied round to stop the fight.

Emenaka who now uses crutches deployed them in the fight, but was quickly dispossessed of them by another Pro Uzoezie lawmaker, Onyebuchi Offor.

DAILY POST gathered that the bone of contention in the Assembly was the refusal of APGA to give tickets to most members of the House.

Emir Of Ilorin Vowed To Step-Down From The Throne If Buhari Win Kwara

The Emir Of Ilorin Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Zulu Gambari on Friday in a shocking but revealing engagement threw is weight behind the earlier endorsement of the candidacy of Barr. Razak Atunwa,

the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate of Kwara State in the fast approaching 2019 elections, according to the Ilorin Emirate Council at the Juma’at service held at Ilorin Central mosque last Friday.

The Emir who expressed is long annoyance to the way the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki was treated while in the All Progressive Congress, a party which Saraki sacrificed life and limb to see to victory in the 2015 general election, said he would not let the injustice consume the embattled Senate President.

The Emir said the issue of Saraki becoming the Senate President, if well handled, could have brought ease in the running of Buhari-led administration. He further admitted that the ridiculous performance of the Buhari-led administration cannot be unconnected to the rift between the ruling party and the 8th Senate led by Sen. Bukola Saraki.

The Emir who said the good governance Kwara is enjoying is because of the genuine love Saraki dynasty have displayed to Kwaran and said: “even as we speak, good and potable water is available for Kwarans, all thanks to Governor AbdulFatai Ahmed leadership and many more.”

He also added that the Buhari-led administration lacks the principle of royal dialogue and has brought the Emirate Council to a point where, if not for Saraki, he would have been in shame over the way investigation into the Jebba contract awarded was handled as it attack his person and the institution he represents.

The Emir emphatically said “I believe in our Son” and wherever Saraki decides will be where Kwarans will go and if Buhari won in Kwara or gather even thirty percent of the total votes come 2019, he would step down and find respite in exile as he believes the good people of Kwara would do all it takes to vote against the second coming of Muhammadu Buhari and protect the Emirate as an institution of authority and advocate of good governance.

Recall that the Emir is one of the machinery that was employed to engineer the downfall of the former Governor of Kwara State, Muhammed Lawal of the blessed memory.

He has, on many occasions, declared is unwavering support for the dynasty even when such loyalty keeps it out of step with his subjects.

It has also been occasionally rumored that the so many government contracts handled by the Emir were earmarked to him as a reward of his continuous support for the dynasty.

Some people in different quarters of the state have described the Emirate outrage as a “shallow threat,” It, however, remains to be seen whether the Emir would fulfill his threat of going into exile after Saraki’s loss.

Breaking News:Buhari Approved Increase In Salaries Of Policemen

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the increase in the salary of the Nigeria Police Force.

He made the announcement during a meeting with security chiefs on Monday in Abuja.

According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media and Publicity), Buhari said his administration will continue to give attention to the welfare and operational needs of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) with a view to restoring its lost primacy in the internal security framework of the country.

Speaking during an audience in State House, Abuja with members of the Nigeria Police Service Commission and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force on a ‘Thank You’ visit following his approval of Rank Salary Structure Adjustment, which will see an increase in the allowances and pension of policemen, Buhari expressed regrets that the shortcomings of the Police in their constitutional role as the frontline force in the prevention of crime had led to military involvement in the maintenance of law and order throughout the country.

His words: “From Taraba to Sokoto, to the South-South, people don’t feel secure until they see the military. I am pleased to make the increase in salary and allowances in the hope that it will increase the performance index of the police and strengthen Nigeria’s internal security system.”

Noting that the more efficient the police is, the more confident the government and citizens will be, he said: “The military should be reserved for higher tasks. The police should be able to cope well with the challenges of armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom and such crimes. In every town and village, there is the presence of the police. From all these places, they should be able to forward first class intelligence to you on which to act.

“There is a need to amplify the question of more men of the police, especially given the condition we are in – emergency in the North-East, pervasive insecurity and abduction for ransom and banditry in many parts of the country. I congratulate you on the success you recorded against criminals taxing people and stopping them from their farms. We are expecting more from you,” the President told the police.

Full-time Commissioner in the Nigeria Police Service Commission, Justice Clara Ogunbiyi (rtd), who represented the chairman, Musiliu Smith, informed the President that the Rank Salary Structure Adjustment would enhance police welfare and morale.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, also assured that the police would redouble efforts to ensure free, fair and credible elections throughout the country next year.

2019: Atiku Reveals Why He Regrets Joining APC

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has apologised for joining the groups who came together to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku said the apology had become necessary because of the sufferings Nigerians had been subjected to in the last three and half years, from a party he played a role in bringing to power.

The former vice-president stated this while speaking at a town hall meeting with residents of Jimeta in Adamawa state.

He said, “I regretted being a part of the party which never deemed it fit to fulfil all of the promises it made to Nigerians.

“If I had known that the APC would be such a colossal failure and disgrace, I would never had joined the party.

“The APC has failed to fulfill even one of the promises it made to Nigerians. The APC is simply an assembly meant to defraud Nigerians.”

I Laugh When People Call Me Clueless – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he laughs anytime people try to run down his administration as a clueless one.

The former President said this in his recently published book titled, ‘ My Transition Hours ’ .

He said , “Sometimes I laugh when certain propagandists attempt to stand logic on its head by maligning my administration as one bereft of ideas and clueless . In assessing my administration, it is best to focus on facts.

“I cannot assess myself. I leave that to history and I make bold to say that never in the history of Nigeria till date has the nation had such a star- studded cabinet full of achievers and people who got to the top of their chosen fields by merit.”

Jonathan said the only thing that saddened him was the hounding of his former ministers by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He, however , said he was happy that many of his ministers and former appointees had become leading world figures today like Adewunmi Adesina and Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala .

Jonathan added , “Most painful has been the attacks on my ministers , aides , associates and even members of my family. There is an attempt to erase our legacy from history . The good thing is that the unending barrage of attacks , deliberate misinformation , and programmed media smear campaigns have failed to sway the opinions of those with the clear view of our beliefs , efforts , and achievements.

“There are millions of Nigerians and others around the world who are still impressed with our modest achievements in consolidating democracy and growing the nation’ s economy. They will continue to serve as my strength and encouragement .”

Akwa Ibom House of Assembly issue : PDP Reacts

Press Conference

Text Of Press Conference By the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over Plots by the Presidency and All Progressives Congress (APC) to Cause Mayhem and Forcefully Take Over Control of Akwa-Ibom State.

Gentlemen of the press,

The PDP has invited you this afternoon to intimate you and the nation of a looming danger, imminent violence and breakdown of law and order in Akwa-Ibom state as well as other littoral states following attempts by President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to forcefully take over control of these states.

As you may recall, two weeks ago, the PDP had cautioned the Buhari Presidency and the APC on their exposed plot to instigate confusion and violence in Bayelsa state by destabilizing the security architecture of the state and foisting a siege mentality on the entire oil rich south-south region.

Instead of retracing their steps, the Buhari Presidency and the APC have continued to design heinous machinations and issuing threats of violent take over of these states, for which they have now directed their arsenals particularly on Akwa-Ibom state.

Nigerians are all witnesses to volatile outbursts by the Buhari Campaign Organization and APC leaders and their use of violent images and outright threats of war on Akwa-Ibom state.

Nigerians are invited to recall the violent and ominous outburst by the former Governor of Akwa-Ibom state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who vowed that the APC will take over the state the same way Hitler overran Poland, swearing that “war shall see Warsaw and Warsaw shall see war” in Akwa-Ibom state.

Given that this statement is the policy of the APC and the Buhari Presidency against Akwa-Ibom and other parts of our nation, where they are not in control, the President, as chief security officer of our nation, never issued a reprimand nor has Senator Akpabio been pulled in for questioning by security agencies.

It is now clear that the statement is an approved prelude of a pre-meditated plot by the Buhari Presidency and the APC to initiate, facilitate and superintend a mayhem and bloodletting in the peaceful and developing Akwa-Ibom, irrespective of the huge human and material damage such could cause in the state.

Part of the plot is the forceful attempt to take over control of the Akwa-Ibom state legislature, for which the Presidency and the APC have been sponsoring the invasion of the House of Assembly complex and seeking ways to violently oust the duly elected leadership of the state assembly

Only recently, the factional National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole, who has been under fire over allegations of corruption, threatened and directly accused the erstwhile Akwa-Ibom Commissioner of Police, John Abang of refusing to carry out APC’s orders to provide security cover that will enable three legally sacked members of the 26-member legislature to effect a change of leadership.

The PDP has information of how the APC hierarchy thereafter, ordered the Inspector General of Police, who in compliance, summarily redeployed CP John Abang and replaced him with a new CP, Hyelasinda Musa Kimo. It is needless to say that Mr. Abang spent just one month as CP and had to be removed for not carrying out APC’s atrocious directive.

Since the arrival of CP Kimo, there has been mounting tension and escalated siege mentality in Akwa-Ibom state, particularly in the state legislature where thugs, backed by the police, have been invading the premises, disrupting legislative activities, harassing staff members and hindering them from performing their responsibilities.

This recourse to self-help, against declarative judgment by competent court of jurisdiction sacking the three lawmakers, is a deliberate attempt to instigate violence, foist a reign of terror, cause confusion, create an impression that the state has become ungovernable. This is with a view to opening the way for a declaration of a state of emergency, which will enable them dismantle all democratic structures and forcefully take over control of the state.

The PDP wants the Buhari Presidency and the APC to bear in mind that their plot to forcefully take over Akwa-Ibom or any other PDP-controlled state will be firmly resisted by the people of those states and such may lead to a crisis of unprecedented magnitude that has the capacity of truncating our hard-earned democracy.

This is because the people of Akwa-Ibom state will never allow anybody, no matter how highly placed, to overrun their state or in any way attempt to foist an undemocratic leadership over them and no amount of intimidation or force will make them change this resolve.

The PDP therefore charges President Buhari and the APC to be ready to take full responsibility for any breakdown of law and order as direct consequences of the people’s resistance to their plot to forcefully take over control of Akwa-Ibom or any of the PDP-controlled states.

Real Reasons I Lost 2015 Presidential Election — Goodluck Jonathan

“Some governors wanted to be Vice President whilst others strived to be the President. If I contested none could realize his ambition.

“As they jumped ship in preparation for the 2015 elections, only very few of this lots, if any at all, bothered about what the PDP did or did not do in terms of delivering our campaign promises. Their opposition to my re-election was principally driven by personal ambition.

The former president also said he faced a barraged of opposition from Northern leaders and the socio-political group who felt he was usurping power from the region.

“Throughout my tenure in office as President, there was constant barrage of what Donald Trump has now termed ‘fake news’ coming from a well-oiled media propaganda machine. I can say as a matter of fact that were never any snipers in training or already trained. There were no lists of political enemies to be taken out.

“There was no missing $49.8 billion and more importantly I can say that even those who made these and other allegations knew that they were false. This probably explains why many of these allegations died a natural death even as the echoes of my retreating footsteps still resounded nationally and globally,” he wrote.
