Catholic Bishops Banned Priests From‘Active Politics’

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has banned Catholic priests and faithful of consecrated life from engaging in partisan politics including becoming a member of any political party.

The Secretary General, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr. Ralph Madu, gave this order on Thursday in Abuja on behalf of the Catholic Bishops.ADVERTISEMENT

They frowned at the public altercation between Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka and a former Anambra State Governor and the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Peter Obi.

The altercation occurred recently at Fr. Mbaka’s adoration ground in Enugu, on the issue of patronage in respect of the forthcoming 2019 general elections.ADVERTISEMENT

According to the Rev. Fr. Madu, the Bishops condemned the shameful scenario on an adoration ground, as contained in video recording that has gone viral on social media, saying the incident does not have the support of the Bishops Conference of Nigeria.

“As has always been our stand, the Catholic church in Nigeria, as clearly stated in their August 7, 2018 directives, remains apolitical and does not support or subscribe to any political party.

“Our concern is for a peaceful election process seen to be free, fair, credible and just, and a democratic governance that guarantees peace, justice, equity, among others.

“On behalf of the conference, we wish to reiterate their obligation as teachers of faith and morals, to educate the faithful on their role in the political life of the country, mindful of the present charged political atmosphere of Nigeria.

“With the ongoing campaigns of political parties gathering momentum, we deemed it necessary to again remind all priests and religious to keep to the position of the church on the issue of non-partisan politics,” Madu said.

While saying that they are sure that the Enugu diocese, where Rev. Mbaka is incardinated, is taking appropriate measures on the incident, they wish to categorically reiterate that no Catholic priest or people of consecrated life should be actively involved in partisan politics in obedience on the Canon Law of the Catholic.

He said, “Also, liturgical ceremonies must never be used as an occasion for political campaigns. The country is presently going through difficult times and we therefore call on all the faithful, to continue to pray for spiritual intervention in the life of our country, by the regular saying of the conference, on daily basis.

“We also enjoined the lay faithful to play their roles in the forthcoming elections premised on good conscience, play their roles at the election without prejudice or inducement and ensure that their votes count and the right people voted into power for the common good.”

Religious Leaders Kicked Against Security Levies On Churches, Mosques

Religious leaders have kicked against security levies imposed on churches and mosques by the Oyo State government, describing it as “unrealistic.”

The state government had during a security summit held on Tuesday announced that religious organisations were also included in security levies.

Churches and mosques, according to the Section 11(4) of the Security Trust Fund Law 2017 of the state, will pay between N20,000 and N60,000 yearly, depending on the size of the religious centre.

Apart from churches and mosques, manufacturing companies would also pay between N80,000 and N100,000 depending on their sizes while agricultural companies would pay N50,000.

Reacting to the levy, the Founder and Spiritual Head of Shafaudeen in Islam, Professor Sabit Ariyo Olagoke, described the levy as “ ill-timed, exploitative and ungodly.”

He said: “The plan of government is ill-timed and wicked. Many people in mosques and churches are groaning under poverty and hunger. Salaries are not paid and the little they are paid are not enough to offset debts of believers in churches and mosques.”

Former President of Aladura Church of Nigeria, Primate Olapade Agoro, said churches and mosques should be exempted from the levy, as “religious organisations are not business outfits.”

The Oyo State Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Benjamin Akanmu urged government to let the levies be minimal.

He said N20,000 might be difficult for churches with a few members to pay.

Catholic Bishop Demands Apology From FG, Amaechi Over Killings

Makurdi Diocese Catholic Bishop Most Reverend Wilfred Anagbe, has demanded an apology from the federal government, especially Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi for allegeldy attempting to change the narratives of the killing of two priests and 17 worshippers in Mbalom last April.

Speaking yesterday at St. Ignatius Quasi Parish Ukpo, Mbalom during a homily to mark the rite of atonement and purification of the community from the spilled blood, Anagbe insisted the killing was carried out by herdsmen.

Two catholic priests and 11 worshippers were killing by suspected Fulani herdsmen during mass in the parish.

The killings attracted national and international condemnation.

Anagbe maintained that survivors and witnesses were not in doubt the killers were herdsmen.

The Bishop alleged the government was using Christians including the minister, APC national chairman as well as presidential spokesman to change the true narrative on the killings. He noted that it was childish and hypocritical for people to insinuate Benue people or Christians were killing themselves.

He wondered if they were responsible for the killings in other states including Zamfara and Katsina.

He said herdsmen sent Rev. Fr. Felix Tyolaha packing from Yogbo in Guma Local Government Area before and he had to plead with him to come to Mbalom and serve only to be killed.

The Bishop stressed the changing narrative was an insult on the sensibilities of the Benue people and Tiv nation.

He urged politicians not sell the Tiv people for what he described as leftovers.

The Bishop offered special prayers at the spot where Father Tyolaha was killed before the celebration of mass.

Britain Set To Return Looted Benin Bronzes To Nigeria After Over 100 Years

Some of the bronzes looted from the Benin Empire by British Soldiers over 100 years will be returned to Nigeria, but with certain terms and conditions, CNN is reporting.

According to CNN, the Benin Dialogue Group (BDG), which comprises of representatives of several European museums, the Royal Court of Benin, Edo State Government, and Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments, struck a deal in October to have “some of the most iconic pieces” return to Nigeria for an exhibition at the new Benin Royal Museum in Edo State within three years.

The return of the artefacts is contingent on the completion of the Royal Museum of Benin, whose designs, according to spokesperson to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Crusoe Osagie, are being finalised.

“We are grateful these steps are being taken but we hope they are only the first steps. If you have stolen property, you have to give it back,” Osagie said.

Osagie also called for more pressure on European governments to return looted artefacts from the colonial era.

A spokesperson for the British Museum, according to CNN, said:-

“The key agenda item (at the October meeting) was how partners can work together to establish a museum in Benin City with a rotation of Benin works of art from a consortium of European museums.

The museums in attendance have all agreed to lend artefacts to the Benin Royal Museum on a rotating basis, to provide advice as requested on building and exhibition design, and to cooperate with the Nigerian partners in developing training, funding, and a legal framework for the display in a new planned museum.

103 Nigerians Stranded In Libya Returned To Lagos With 13 Infants

Less than two weeks after 141 Nigerians were repatriated from Libya, another 116 citizens of the country were returned from the war-torn North African country early on Wednesday.

The latest batch of returnees was received by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The stranded Nigerians were assisted back to the country by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in a chartered flight Al Buraq Airlines with flight number UZ 489.

The aircraft that brought the returnees landed at 12:40am and disembarked the repatriated at the cargo area of the Lagos Airport.

Commenting on the returnees, Mr. Segun Afolayan, the Acting Coordinator, NEMA South West Zone, said that the returnees comprised 53 females and 63 males.

Among them were 46 adult females, two female children and five female infants with 56 male adults, six male children and eight male infants.

Afolayan advised the returnees to discourage other prospective illegal migrants from engaging in the act, especially with the danger inherent in such adventure.

Afolayan stated that migration is a fundamental right of every human being, but when a man embarks on irregular journey, violating the laws of other nations by not following the regular means of migration, the country of destination may apply the nation’s laws to handle such.

To end such irregular migration, the Acting Zonal Coordinator urged other Nigerians who wish to migrate to foreign countries to visit the Migrant Resource Centre opened by IOM in conjunction with the Federal Government.

“The centres are opened to all Nigerians who wish to travel outside the country. They can access detailed information on their intended country of destination,” he said.

“Such information as the types of employment and educational opportunities, counselling on the right and safe routes to travel, the security level of the expected country as well as skill acquisition to whoever approach any of the centres in the country.

“These centres are created to stem the gaps of inadequate information that many Returnees have been complaining about.

RCCG Church Collapse Notice : Pastor Chooses Life Insurance Over Relocation In Uyo.

A pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Akwa Ibom State has insured the lives of 500 of his members, following a warning by the state government that the area is prone to landslide.

The state government had issued an evacuation notice to all property owners along the Uyo Village Road, where the church is located. The notice was issued after another church, Reigners’ Bible Church, collapsed.

In 2000, the state government had designated the area a forest reserve and declared all the structures erected in the place illegal.

Speaking during a media interaction in Uyo on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Ime Ekpo, said the RCCG and other property owners had refused to move out of the disaster-prone area despite the evacuation notice served on them.

According to Ekpo, government had to order the RCCG to insure the lives of its members in case the church building collapsed during service, since the church had refused to heed government’s directive to quit the area.

He said: “They say they have approval, but I will like to see such approval. That church (Redeemed Christian Church of God) structure, we have already given them demolition notice.

“When they came begging, I told them that in about three to four years, that structure will come down on its own because the erosion behind the church is very active. By the time we went on inspection, even the first fence they erected had gone down.

“So, what I insisted they should do is to post an insurance of 500 worshippers, so that if anything happens, the families will have something to fall back on. So, they have done that and I have made sure that it is active on a yearly basis.

“There are a lot of illegal structures in Uyo. In this ministry, we have already set up a demolition committee. We have already identified structures that we need to bring down so that others will also know that before they erect a structure, they must get approval.”

2019: Seventh Day Adventist Sued INEC , FG To Court Over Saturday Voting

The applicants in the matter, Chief Emeka Anyabelem, Elder Asonye Onwudebe, Felix Minikwu and Chinedu Omesurum, said conducting elections on Saturday amounts to the violation of their rights to worship and disenfranchisement of other members of their church.

In the suit, PHC/2836/2018, the applicants prayed the court to declare that holding elections on Saturday, the worship day for the denomination, is a violation of the Seventh Day Adventist Church members rights.

The suit read in part: “A declaration that the applicants’ known day of worship being Saturday, they are entitled to their freedom of religion and worship on Saturdays unhindered or by any means, whatsoever, under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“A declaration that the fixing/scheduling of the 2019 presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday, February 16, 2019, and the governorship and state Assembly elections/Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections on Saturday, March 2, by the first respondent, in concert with the second and third respondents, constitute a violation of the applicants’ fundamental rights to freedom of religion.”

The applicants said their rights being violated are guaranteed under Section 38 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, and Article 8 of the African Charter on Human and People’s (Enforcement and Ratification) Act, Cap A9.

The applicants further prayed the court to make an order of injunction restraining the third defendants, INEC, from conducting the 2019 election as scheduled or scheduling any other elections on Saturday.

Meanwhile, when the matter came up yesterday, in court, Ahamefule Owurre, counsel to the applicants, prayed for adjournment, to allow him to reply counter affidavit of the defence on point of law.

He said the desire of the applicants is that elections be fixed between Monday and Thursday to allow many people to participate in the electioneering process.

However, the trial judge, Justice M. Danagogo, adjourned the matter till December 18, for motions.

In 2011, the church threatened to sue the federal government over the general election should its members be disenfranchised through the fixing of poll dates on Saturdays and urged the government to shift election days to enable its members to participate.

Also, the church called on the former INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, to reconsider changing the election timetable to enable its members to participate in the exercise.

Devastating : Government Should Deduct Tithes From Workers’ Salaries And Forward To Church – Catholic Archbishop Says

Most Reverend Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, a Catholic Archbishop of Kampala, Uganda, has proposed that the central government deducts 10% from the monthly salaries of workers, and forward the deductions directly to the church.

He stated this at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Rubaga during mass, according to Citizen TV. He said non-payment of tithes affects project development in the church.

His words: “Whenever we ask for tithe, everyone gives only what they have at that time. But the Bible says a tenth of whatever you earn belongs to the church.

Give me your support as I front this proposal because it is good for us.

Aren’t you tired of putting money in the baskets all the time?” Lwanga said he wanted Uganda to toe the line of Germany, where citizens who are registered as Catholics, Protestants or Jews have a church tax (Kirchensteuer) of 8 to 9% deducted from their annual income.

The church tax is collected by the government and channeled to the respective faiths.

“I was told Germans make agreements with their government to deduct monthly tithe from their salaries and forward it to the church and this money they use to build and renovate their churches,” he added

Governors Summons Emergency Meeting For Tuesday To Decide New Minimum Wage

An emergency meeting of the Nigerian Governors Forum is scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, 2018, to discuss the new national minimum wage.

This was disclosed by Abdulaziz Yari, Governor of Zamfara State on Tuesday, after a meeting of the Economic Management Team, which had Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo in attendance.

According to NAN, Yari spoke after the meeting on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he restated that it was not that the governors were unwilling to pay, but the issue was “the muscle to pay”.

He said: “The position of the governors is not very clear to some of you — that we are willing to pay the amount but the issue is the capacity — the muscle to pay. We discussed that government has some numbers and eventually, the committee has made some proposals, but the governors have not come out with any amount.

“So, tomorrow, we are going to discuss with governors and say ‘look at what Labour is sending’.

“[We’ll] look at the bill that was directed by the Minister of Labour and Employment to be sent to the NGF’s secretariat, so that we can digest the content of the bill, discuss it and come up with our position as governors, because we are critical partners on this.”

Five Catholic Nuns (Rev Sisters) Kidnapped in Delta

The hoodlums reportedly intercepted the private vehicle of the nuns, and shot at their vehicle, injuring two nuns on the leg before making away with the other five. In a text message to our correspondent in Asaba, a priest in the diocese stated: “Please, pray for the release of five MMM Sisters kidnapped at Agbor, and two other MMM Sisters in the same vehicle shot at the leg region. The Sisters were on their way from the east where they went for a funeral.” The state Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Mustafa, who confirmed it on Friday night, said the victims were in a private vehicle when the hoodlums struck, adding that the identity of the victims were yet to be ascertained. Catholic Bishop Charge For Raping Nun And Sexual Harrasement In India

Bishop Franco Mulakkal (2nd R), accused of raping a nun, is escorted by police outside a crime branch office on the outskirts of Kochi in the southern state of Kerala, India, September 21, 2018. REUTERS/Sivaram V

The Roman Catholic Church already enmeshed in sexual abuse scandals in several parts of the world faces another embarrassment in India, with Bishop Franco Mulakkal being arrested for raping a nun.

Bishop Mulakkal was arrested by the police Friday in the south Indian state of Kerala, a day after the Vatican accepted the bishop’s request to be temporarily relieved of his duties.

There was no immediate comment from Bishop Franco Mulakkal or his lawyers – though he has denied the charges in interviews in the past.

Mulakkal, who heads the diocese of Jalandhar, wrote to the Vatican on Sunday asking to step down temporarily as protests and calls for his arrest grew. The Vatican accepted his request on Thursday.

“He is charged with rape,” said Kochi’s inspector general of police, Vijay Sakhare.

A Vatican spokesman said he had no immediate comment on the matter.

The arrest comes at a time when the state’s Christian community is reeling from a string of cases – including the arrests of five priests last month on allegations of sexual assault. Their church said it believed the priests were innocent.

Outside India, the Catholic Church is facing sexual abuse scandals in the United States, Chile, Australia, Germany and other countries.

Pope Francis has summoned the heads of national Catholic bishops from around the world to the Vatican to discuss the protection of minors at an extraordinary meeting from Feb. 21-24.

Mulakkal, 54, was ordained as a priest in 1990 in the northern Indian Punjab state and was elevated as the bishop of the Diocese of Jalandhar five years ago.

Nnewi And The Depth Of Poor Road Infrastructure.By Ebubechukwuzuloke Brown

From Ugoedo in Edoji Uruagu to Ezemewi road, from the densely populated Okponoegbu, Akaboezem and Okponoeze to the popular Nkwo Nnewi, from Mbanagu Otolo, Enem, Mmili Ele, to the collapsed 100 foot road, the embarrassing sight of Nnewi roads surfaces is worth pushing a flood of tears from the eyes of any concerned citizen of Anambra State. Only a thoroughly deluded citizen, one blinded by political sentiments will heap praises on the performance of government as it concerns road infrastructure in Nnewi.

The deplorable state of roads and lack of motorable and access roads to the ever increasing population in Nnewi have remained a nightmare to residents and visitors especially during the raining season.

For a town that receives approximately 120 million Naira monthly as local government allocation from the federation account and for a commercial/industrial town that generates billions of Naria to Anambra state government to have these deplorable state of roads clearly is a failure on the part of the government.

Whenever it rains, the roads in the commercial and industrial city of Nigeria remains an eyesore, residents and visitors can only wish for the possibility of having wings to fly just to aviod the bitter experiences of Nnewi roads.

The most unfortunate part of the development is that the existing good roads in the town are fast dilapidating due to the high volume of traffic plying them.

For some years now, except for the administration of Chris Ngige and Peter Obi/Etiaba, roads in Nnewi have not received major attention, some of the roads constructed in the past were poorly built with low-quality materials. Most of the paved road networks have lost their asphalt surface and are in a very bad shape. Most of the roads are covered by water during the raining season because of lack of proper drainage, lots of uneven surfaces, potholes, and eroded areas.

Some of the roads includes, Ugoedo road, Mmili Ele Okongwu Grammar School, Nnewi Ozubulu road, Okponoegbu roads, Akaboezem roads, Nkwo Nnewi roads, Nnewi Enem hall to Awka Etiti road, 100 foot road, St. Mary’s to Oraifite road, Okponoeze roads, Owerri road, Nnewi Abada to St. Peter Otolo to Awka Etiti road, flooding at bank road, Mbanagu road, Inyaba Umudim road and rest. The list is indeed endless.

Poor road maintenance is also a major problem contributing to the poor state of roads in Nnewi. Most of the major roads networks in Nnewi were poorly constructed. Due to poor maintenance and low-quality materials, the roads keep getting worse.

There is the need for improvement on the ring roads to enable easier connectivity with other important roads in the town. The increasing population, also called for more expansion of Nnewi roads to ease the congestion that has continued to cause serious traffic gridlock, thereby leading to long hours being wasted in the traffic especially along Ibeto Junction, St. Marys road, Amuko Junction, Owerri road, Nwafor Uruagu road and Nnewi Roundabout which connects the four quarters in the City centre where the market, offices and businesses are mostly located.

Credit must be given to Hon. Engr. Chris Azubuogu, the member representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo in the Federal House of Representative, despite not being any executive position, he has been to influence the construction of some roads in Nnewi more than the state government have done in the last three years.

However, the state government must make construction and rehabilitation of roads a priority in Nnewi. The multiplicity of accessible road network remains the backbone of social and economic activities in Nnewi. Road maintenance and repair should be done on regular and at appropriate time intervals. Proper drainage facilities along road networks should be available. Traffic lights should be established at major junctions in Nnewi.

The business community and the leadership of Nnewi must rise to the demand for improved road infrastructure in Nnewi from the state government.

Pastor Naked Female Church Member’s , Calls It Pregnancy Deliverance

The church has more than its share of stern critics these days.

Sometimes the criticism is unwarranted. People project their issues onto a congregation or onto the church, which is never healthy.

And, as a matter of course, the church will inevitably run into criticism as it has always been ever since. What the church is doing is counter-cultural and will never be met with universal applause. The Gospel, even when powerfully shared, got John the Baptist, the Apostle Paul, Jesus and the prophets killed, just to name a few. While it seems strange to say it, even love, when seen fully and magnificently, gets rejected.

Yet, other times the church absolutely deserve the criticism that comes its way. Often these days, it seems, the church is not ridiculed or persecuted because they are fighting so nobly. Nay, sometimes they just shoot themselves in the foot. Viz, most of the unpleasant things said about some churches are verifiable and they are called for by them, like self-infliction.

From the stunting online preachers, political commentators, poorly conflict handlers, to doom-spraying folks and child molesters – the house of God has been making headlines for ill-considered reasons.

Well, because church has become the gift that keeps giving scandalous and hot topics every day, this week abuzz on the interwebs is an unidentified Man of God who is alleged to have asked a female barren congregant to take off her undergarment and open her legs wide before the congregation so he could pray for her panties for her to conceive. It’s not clear where this preacher is from exactly, as various media outlets have claimed that he’s Zambian while others are saying he’s from Nigeria.

One Zambian site quoted the preacher saying:

“My daughter, in the realm of the spirit, I heard God telling me that your barrenness can only be overcome if I pray for your under panties, please undress so that I can pray for it”, the prophet told the woman and she gladly accepted as she was desperately looking for the fruit of the womb.
The woman in question is rumoured to have been in a marriage for 5 years without a child, hence he visited this pastor who clearly did not wary about her decency and asked that she undress and open her legs so he could order pregnancy to enter inside.

Hat tip to the new media, a lucky fellow who was in attendance captured the undignified moment on a smartphone and shared it around. Since then the picture has since gone viral, causing outrage online.

Breaking News “The Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation of Philip Edward Wilson, presented by S.E. Mons.

Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Philip Wilson, an Australian archbishop convicted in May of concealing abuse by a notorious paedophile priest in the 1970s, the Vatican said Monday. Earlier this month Wilson, 67, was sentenced to a year in detention after becoming one of the highest-ranking church officials to be convicted on the charge.

“The Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation of the pastoral government of the Archdiocese of Adelaide (Australia), presented by S.E. Mons. Philip Edward Wilson,” the Vatican said in a statement.

His resignation comes less than a fortnight after Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull asked the pope to sack Wilson, who was found guilty in an Australian court of failing to report allegations against paedophile priest Jim Fletcher.

He had long denied the charges and initially resisted calls to resign pending an appeal against his conviction. Wilson’s legal team made four attempts to have the case thrown out, arguing that he suffered from Alzheimer’s and so should avoid trial. But a magistrate in Australia found Wilson guilty of concealing a serious indictable offence of another person, concluding that his primary motive was to protect the church.

He said when sentencing him that Wilson showed “no remorse or contrition”. The court has adjourned the matter until August 14 to assess whether Wilson can serve his sentence under home detention.

he introduced himself to be the father of this man in the picture with my sister, that he heard we reject the wedding and traditional marriage which will hold on 7th and 8th of July 2018.
that he came only to appeal for us to accept his apology to hold the wedding, that it will be an insult to him if the wedding did not hold, that he had informed their churches all over Nigeria that his Son Is getting marriage, that He had shared the wedding card Since ending of May 2018.
I asked him a question “Is this not the first time am seeing you? How can an elder like you do such evil, by printing a wedding card without knowing your inlaws?

. This, for me, is a foretaste of the last day. Will you recognise the Lord when Are comes to you.

Will He find you doing good, according to look Luke chapter 6v38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands–all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.”

From this illustration from the man of God remind what the book of Isaiah said.

Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

and Matt 25vs 35-37 said the same thing

For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, 36I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’

37 Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?…
